Louis Labeyrie? An unrealistic target for Cholet Basket

Recently released by Kazan, his Russian club since 2022, Louis Labeyrie (2.09m, 33 years) could be a valuable addition to a Betclic ELITE club. Cholet Basket inquired about the former French international to compensate for Bastien Vautier’s injury. However, despite his attractive profile, he proved to be beyond the club’s budget.

An attractive profile, but prohibitive salary

With his experience in EuroLeague, Liga Endesa, and the French national team, Louis Labeyrie checks all the boxes to strengthen a frontcourt. In a context where available locally trained players (JFL) are rare, the termination of his contract with Kazan created quite a stir in the market.

Cholet Basket, which just lost Bastien Vautier for several weeks, naturally reached out to the big man in case an opportunity arose. But reports about his salary expectations quickly cooled Cholet’s interest. « He would need to accept playing for minimum wage, » was mentioned behind the scenes Saturday night after the victory against Nanterre, according to Ouest-France.

Cholet looking elsewhere

The situation is even more complicated as Chris-Ebou Ndow (1.98m, 31 years), CB’s Norwegian forward, is now out for the rest of the season. However, this absence allows the club to expand its search to non-JFL profiles, since Ebou-Ndow, being Norwegian, has Bosman player status.

So, center or forward? The club is adapting based on market availability. « We’re monitoring the market and are open to all options. We’re looking for the best possible player for us, one who fits our identity, » stated Sports Director Fabrice Lefrançois. « But it has to fit within our budget. We’re Cholet Basket, not Monaco… »

Recruitment constrained by financial means

While waiting for Vautier’s return – hoped before season’s end – CB might prioritize signing a forward to compensate for Chris Ebou-Ndow’s loss. However, no specific name has emerged yet. It’s challenging in April to find an available player who is competitive, fits the financial constraints, and can quickly integrate into a team competing for playoffs.

For now, Cholet Basket remains on the lookout. But without a budgetary miracle or market opportunity, Louis Labeyrie is unlikely to wear the Cholet jersey.
