AS Monaco’s finances received good news this Friday, April 4. In a statement, the FFBB (French Basketball Federation) appeals chamber announced its decision to reform the amount of financial compensation owed by the club to the LNB for the 2024-2025 season. Instead of paying its « Luxury Tax » of €952,771, the Principality club will only have to pay €258,330.30 to the National Basketball League (LNB). This has angered many LNB club presidents who denounce behind-the-scenes negotiations between high-level LNB officials and the principality club, with renewed discussions about the broadcaster Skweek initiated in light of the case between the Professional Football League (LFP) and DAZN.

A reduction of more than 50%

As a reminder, since the 2023-2024 season, AS Monaco must pay a financial tax to the LNB, the « Luxury Tax » (set at €1.25 million, an amount reassessed each season based on the previous year’s payroll). Established for now until 2026 with the aim of providing more sporting equity to the French championship, it applies to teams with a payroll equal to or greater than €8.5 million for year N-1. For the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the Roca Team had a payroll of €13,099,500.

This time, for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, instead of paying a balance of around one million euros, Monaco will only have to pay just over €250,000, unless ASM decides to appeal to the Administrative Court to further contest this decision.

A penalty due to Mike James’ contract extension?

However, the Roca Team might have to pay for a completely different matter according to our information. While Mike James (1.85m, 34 years) was extended for three years last summer, until 2027, the star from Oregon’s re-signing was allegedly done without a FFBB sports agent.

The principality club maintains that his extension was completed without a foreign agent, which the Agents Commission does not believe, having received Monegasque officials this Thursday, April 3. It remains to be seen what the potential penalty might be regarding this matter.
