Walter Tavares named EuroLeague MVP for March-April, before facing Paris?

Walter Tavares (7’3″, 33 years old) has made his mark once again. The Cape Verdean center for Real Madrid has been named MVP for March and April in EuroLeague, an award that recognizes his consistency and decisive impact during the regular season’s final sprint.

A well-deserved MVP for Walter Tavares

With an impressive end to the 2024-2025 EuroLeague regular season, Walter Tavares dominated the European paint during the last seven games. Averaging 16.7 points with 77.4% shooting on two-pointers, 7.1 rebounds, 0.9 blocks, and an average performance index rating of 21.3, the Real Madrid giant led his team to a 6-1 record. This streak helped the Madrid club secure 7th place and home-court advantage for the play-in against Paris Basketball this Tuesday, April 15.

Walter Tavares has been consistently performing: scoring between 13 and 23 points each game, grabbing at least 5 rebounds every time, and never dropping below a 14 rating. He particularly shined against direct competitors like Milan, ASVEL, and ALBA Berlin, while also defeating Bologna, Red Star Belgrade, and Paris. Against Paris, he finished with a 26 rating in both the first meeting (round 16) and the return game (round 33) – a team that lacks the weapons to counter his size and power. It remains to be seen if former center Tiago Splitter will find solutions by Tuesday to counter the three-time EuroLeague Best Defender.

Fourth monthly MVP trophy

Previously named MVP in October 2018, November 2021, and April 2023, Tavares wins this monthly distinction for the fourth time in his career. He now joins Sasha Vezenkov in third place for most awarded players, behind Mike James (5) and Nikola Mirotic (7).

The Cape Verdean center was already decisive in April 2023, leading Real to the title. He surely hopes to repeat this feat and deliver a 12th EuroLeague trophy to the Spanish giant. His dominance will be crucial starting this Tuesday against the Parisians.
