Nick Weiler-Babb (1.96m, 29 years old), Bayern Munich’s guard, has been named the 2024-2025 EuroLeague Defensive Player of the Year. The award, decided by competition coaches, recognizes the impressive season of the German-American player. Alpha Diallo (2.01m, 27 years old), Monaco’s defensive cornerstone, completes the podium in third place.

No Bayern Munich player had ever been named EuroLeague’s best defender before. That’s now changed with Nick Weiler-Babb, who just completed his fifth season in the competition with the Bavarian club. His consistency and defensive impact on the perimeter helped him finish ahead of Real Madrid center Walter Tavares (three-time trophy winner) and Monaco forward Alpha Diallo.
Weiler-Babb finished the regular season with impressive defensive statistics: 52 steals (league-best), 1.6 steals per game (best average), and 4.2 rebounds per game, the highest average for a player in his position. His ability to defend multiple positions and disrupt passing lanes made him a central element of Bayern’s system.
According to Sport24, AS Monaco is closely monitoring the player’s situation, who is under contract with Bayern until 2026. A logical interest given that Vassilis Spanoulis’s team has sometimes struggled defensively this season.
A solid season despite uncertain future for Bayern
Offensively, Nick Weiler-Babb has also been valuable with 8.4 points, 5 assists, and an excellent 43.4% three-point shooting percentage in 26 minutes per game over 33 matches. He is his team’s best passer and one of Gordon Herbert’s group leaders.
Collectively, Bayern Munich still has a chance to reach the playoffs. After their play-in victory against Red Star Belgrade (97-93), the Bavarians must play one final decisive game against Real Madrid to face Olympiacos in the first round. If they lose, their European season will end there.
