Player Profile

Hugo Besson is a scoring guard who can play point guard. Trained in his home region of Var (at Bandol then Toulon ASPTT, with one season at Roanne in between), the son of Jean-Paul Besson and grandson of Paul Besson joined Chalon at age 15 to enter their youth academy.

The former Antibes Youth Academy player quickly established himself as one of the best scorers in U18 ELITE and then in the Espoirs championship. Not quite ready for the professional team, Hugo Besson was loaned to Saint-Quentin in 2020-2021. Under Julien Mahé, he was the revelation of the season, finishing as Pro B top scorer, best young player and nearly MVP, a title won by his teammate Parker Jackson-Cartwright with whom he formed a thunderous backcourt duo at SQBB.

On NBA teams' radar, Hugo Besson then chose to join the Next Star program in NBL with the New Zealand Breakers. Alongside another young Frenchman, Ousmane Dieng, the Var native stood out despite his team finishing last in the league. The Milwaukee Bucks selected him with the last pick of the 2022 NBA Draft.

However, the 2021 NBA champions didn't invite him to join immediately after the Draft. After some hesitation, Hugo Besson joined Victor Wembanyama and Vincent Collet's Metropolitans 92 for the 2022-2023 season. Important in the first half of the season, he required hip surgery mid-season. Returning to competition in spring 2023, he found himself at the end of the rotation. These performances led him to find a new contract in Serbia with FMP Belgrade. But this experience was also short-lived and he left the club after a final game in mid-January 2024. Hugo Besson then joined Italian team Varese, struggling in Serie A. His start there has been good so far.
