Player Profile
Joel Ayayi is a versatile guard who can play shooting guard and small forward positions as well as point guard.
Trained in Bordeaux at US Le Bouscat, the younger brother of Valeriane Ayayi and older brother of Gerald Ayayi joined Elan Bearnais at U15 level. After his years at the Aquitaine Youth Academy, he continued his development at the French National Institute. Academically advanced, he skipped his U18 season at INSEP to start his NCAA career at just 17 years old at Gonzaga. After redshirting his first season, he spent three seasons with the Bulldogs. Following the 2021 March Madness final, Joel Ayayi declared for the NBA Draft but went undrafted.
Signed by the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-way contract, the French-Beninese player wasn't kept by the 2020 champions and signed the same type of contract with Washington D.C. Playing mainly in the G-League, he was released by the Wizards in March 2022. In 2022-23, Joel Ayayi played exclusively in G-League for Magic Lakeland. Eventually, he decided to return to France in summer 2023, joining Nanterre 92 where he reunited with French national team assistant coach Pascal Donnadieu.
Joel Ayayi became a practice player for the French national team during World Cup preparation. After a successful youth national team career (bronze medal at the 2018 U18 EuroBasket and 2019 U19 World Cup), the Bordeaux native hopes to earn his place on the senior national team in the future.
