Player Profile
Matthew Strazel is a French point guard. Trained at Marne-la-Vallée, he benefited from the connection with ASVEL's youth academy to join the Rhône club in 2017, despite not being part of the Île-de-France Elite Training Center.
Matthew Strazel quickly established himself as a key member of ASVEL's youth academy. This led him to the professional team. Starting in the 2019-2020 season, Zvezdan Mitrovic didn't hesitate to give him professional playing time while he was still U18. On October 29, 2019, he scored 9 points against Baskonia in his first EuroLeague game at 17 years and 85 days old. Though he became a full professional in the following months, his role at ASVEL remained as a rotation player. As a result, he chose to leave ASVEL for Monaco in 2022. Signed for three seasons, Matthew Strazel gained more playing time in his second season.
Meanwhile, Matthew Strazel established himself in the French national team after COVID-19. As starting point guard of the French team that won U19 World Cup silver in 2021, he couldn't lead France to the semifinals of the 2022 U20 EuroBasket. Since then, he has joined the senior French national team, first as a practice player and then as a full squad member during the February 2024 window.
